Google Enables Offline Data Storage for Web Apps
I almost missed this one in TechCrunch. Google is rolling out a new API called Gears. It’s a browser plugin that allows web applications to store data locally. I’ve checked out the code and you can write SQL statements directly in your javascript. The data is stored in a local copy of SQLite.
I love the concept, but before I get too excited, I have to ask myself, “What’s it gonna’ be?” There’s so much new technology: Silverlight, Apollo, Gears, etc. I don’t have time to experiment and then throw my stuff in the trash if it doesn’t work out. I want to start using these things now, but I also don’t want to invest myself too heavily into something that might not fly. It’s great to have backing from heavyweights like Google, Microsoft, and Adobe, but I don’t want to tie myself to a browser download unless I can be sure that people are going to install it.
