Running Behind on Time

It was very odd, I’d jump on a conference call, and I’d be the last one there.  I always try to be prompt, so I couldn’t figure out why I seemed a little behind lately.  Finally, I looked at the clock on my PC, and it’s been running about 3 minutes late.  That’s too little time to really take notice, but just enough to make me late for meetings.

Adjusting your PC clock manually is a trivial task, but I was surprised that it had gotten behind in the first place.  Windows XP has this neat feature that will automatically sync your clock every week.  I checked to make sure that it was still working.  The setting can be found under Control Panel, Date and Time, Internet Time.

You can check for issues with the sync process by clicking on the Update Now button.  Wait a bit, and you will see a message of success or failure.  My updates were failing and my PC hasn’t been syncing with the time server.  I tried a few things to fix this.  My firewall was the issue.  The firewall wasn’t showing me any error messages, but it was blocking access to the time server and my time sync couldn’t occur.

How many people is this affecting without their knowing?  Check your PC’s clock.  Is it correct?

See the National Institute of Standards and Technology for more information.
