Social Media News Release Addresses Healthcare-Associated Infections

January 13, 20111 Comment

I ran across a great example of a Social Media News Release from Kimberly-Clark Health Care today.  The release describes a website that has been created to address the issue of Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAIs).  It contains a number of multimedia items and does a nice job of providing embed codes and links to make the information extremely easy to share.  The website,  "Not on My Watch" (www.haiwatch.com) , provides tools and information to help facilities eliminate HAIs.

While I admire the release, the subject also touched me personally.  My grandfather went into a hospital about ten years ago with a tumor in his brain.  I flew down to be with him during his surgery.  The surgeon was brilliant and my grandfather’s prognosis was good.  My grandfather came out of the hospital and began to recover at home.  Unfortunately, he had contracted an infection.  He had been growing stronger, but suddenly his progress reversed and he died several days later.  The tumor didn’t kill him, but the infection did.

If this type of site can lower the risks that we face in our healthcare facilities, it’s something I strongly support.  I’m pleased that the SMNR made it so easy to share the information with you, and I’d encourage you to share this information with your healthcare provider.

Sorry to hear about your grandfather. It’s good to see another organization trying to tackle this issue, and it looks like they’re doing a pretty good job of communicating about it, too.

But “healthcare” is not a word! If millions of people insisted on writing “firstaid,” that would just be dumb. And it’s no different. It’s “health care,” people!
