Family Matters
I remember having a fantastic conversation last year with Robert Anderson at the Berkeley Geek Dinner about his family. He shared with me some details about his kids and I could see the pride beaming from his face. I feel the same way about my family, and I hope I give off that same aura.
I’ve passed up a lot of career opportunities because my family has come first. They’re important to me, and I want to be home with my kids at night. I remember talking with someone at a trade show about a consulting job and I mentioned that I like to be home with my kids. He told me that since he’s been consulting, his kids actually see him more. He was proud of that, but it just sounded ludicrous to me. How can you spend time with your kids when you’re on the road three-quarters of the week? They grow up not seeing you — not feeling your support, not knowing you. No thanks.
So, in reading about some of Rob Scoble’s reasons for leaving Microsoft, I was very happy to see that he would be spending more time with his son. My daughter’s about the same age as his son and I’m going to be attending her elementary graduation this week too. The time goes by way too quickly with these kids. I know it’s not always possible, but when it is, don’t waste precious moments by being away from them.
