Twit Connect
Twit Connect provides your readers with the ability to quickly claim their comments through a Twitter-provided login. The method used by Twitter to enable this process is called oAuth. oAuth is an authentication standard that allows users to identify themselves using their Twitter user name without needing to provide their Twitter password.
Twit Connect provides two different options for connecting to Twitter, hosted oAuth or self-hosted. Using the hosted method, your blog will connect to a Whitley Media server which will manage the oAuth exchange. In the self-hosted option, everything is handled on your blog, however you must register your blog with Twitter as a Twitter application. PHP 5 or greater is required to run the self-hosted option. The hosted option will run under PHP 4 or 5.
These are the steps that are required for the self-hosted option:
- Install the plugin.
- Register your blog on Twitter.com and retrieve your Consumer Key and Consumer Secret.
- Plug those items into Twit Connect’s configuration page and you will have a complete and independent oAuth application.
When your readers want to comment on a post, they’ll simply click on a button and provide their Twitter credentials to identify themselves. You’ll also see their Twitter avatar alongside the comments if you’ve setup avatar support on your blog.
With the hosted option, simply enable the plugin. You do not need to register your blog with Twitter.
Twit Connect sports a choice of two different buttons, the classic Twit Connect button or the “Signin with Twitter” button from Peter Denton.

The Twitter form was designed for applications, but it can work for your blog too. Please see the example below:

Thanks smoMashup
You are right, I unchecked the “self-Hosted” option and everything works again.
I’m using FireFox.
Great plugin. Thanks for the work.
I’m texting it and the oauth is working great. It automaticalluy creates a user in wordpress mu. However, not seeing avatars or any other data coming in. Email comes in as nomail@nomail.com.
Any suggestions?
Ah, now I see avatars in the WP MU back end users admin. I guess buddypress just needs to be setup to call these?
Hi!
I am experiencing the same problem as someone else in this comment thread but didn’t see any kind of reply to him at all.
I wasn’t sure if the company who hosts are site is on PHP 5 so I tried that option first, got my twitter app info plugged but got “PHP 5 or greater is required to run Self-Hosted oAuth.”
I deleted those two boxes and unchecked the self-hosted box but I still get “PHP 5 or greater is required to run Self-Hosted oAuth.” either way.
What could be causing this? Help please, I want this awesome plugin badly!
For those who have been receiving the warning messages: “Warning: Cannot modify header information…,” I encourage you to upgrade to version 1.5. I’ve changed how the redirects work and you won’t see that message anymore.
I started to write a “tweet this comment” module, but it would require the plugin to grab (and probably store) the user’s oAuth credentials. I’m still not comfortable with that on a blog. There’s just too much potential for abuse.
@DavidBates and @smoMashup – The latest version should work better for you.
Flawless. I manually upgraded to 1.5 and it did take care of the problem.. thank you so much!
Of note, the upgrade did not show up as available in my Plugins. Not a big deal but as a blog owner I usually just update what shows as ‘needing an update’ inside my WP-Admin.
Cheers mate!
hi,
great plugin got it working in the first try.
using wp 2.8.4 on http://everydaynewgames.com
was trying to make me own plugin, but why reevent the weel.
grts,
isabell
@smoMashup – Thanks for the feedback. Glad to hear it’s working. The notifications take some time to come down from WP.org. If you wanted to wait a few days, you would have eventually seen the update.
A nice… i will wait new release. Great Job
Testing Plugin Comment.
In your screenshot where you are showing settings for creating new Twitter App, you should also show setting of “Yes, use Twitter for login” as checked since unchecking it can create some problems.
BTW subscription to comments does not work with this Plugin.
I will give a try.
It works, but the twitter button is shown below the comment text box. Is it because of the theme used or something else?
Shannon,
Nice plugin, thank you. One annoying “feature” that I am experiencing, is this:
I go to the wp-login.php page and instead of clicking on sign in with twitter, I enter my username/pw to authenticate against WordPress. If I then press the enter button instead of clicking on the WordPress log in button, the Twitter OAuth window pops up instead of the enter key having the default affect of triggering the SordPress log in.
Any thoughts?
Hey, this plugin is really great. You should know though, if you remove the id=”twc_connect” from the intro text…the button won’t show up. Just wanted to let you know…you might want to add that to the notification text under the textarea in the backend.
I already have Tweetable installed, which also uses oAuth and the site is registered with Twitter Applications.
So, do you recommend creating registering a second application with twitter, or can we use the existing secret keys (though, not sure how since the callback will be different.)
Thanks,
Ryan
@tekbug – You can use the same registration if the callback goes back to the main page of your blog.

“PHP 5 or greater is required” I’m getting this error whether or not I try self-hosted or regular. Just not working for me? What am I doing wrong?
Anyone know how to fix the issue where when you hit Enter to login from the WordPress site, it pops up the Twitter OAuth page instead of using the normal WordPress login?
I’d like to have my users explicitly click on the twitter login button to avoid any confusion.
@CyberSNAC – I think I understand what you’re saying. The default has become the oAuth button. I’ll look into changing that for the next version. If I have time, I’ll send you a fix.
– Actually, I just tried it and the enter key worked fine for me. This is using Google Chrome. Maybe in another browser it will work differently.
@swhitley – I haven’t tested Chrome but I get the same results in FF 3.5 or IE 8.
Shannon
The plugin seems to work but when you authorise the connection on Twitter, it responds with:
You’ve successfully granted access
Simply return and enter the following PIN to complete the process.
and then gives you a seven-digit number. There is nowhere to enter this pin when you come back to my site, and it never does that ‘re-routing you back to the application’ thing that is typical with UOath.
Any thoughts?
Cheers,
Sheamus
ps. You can test it here: http://twittercism.com/tweepml/ (at the very bottom of the page)
@Sheamus – Take a look at your setup on http://twitter.com/oauth for the application. Do you have it setup for desktop? It should be web.
Just a test
What would be really good would be to see some fixes to twitconnect.php to make the code valid.
1) Line 260: Change the & to the encoded & ; (minus space of course)
2) Line 261: Make the img element include an alt attribute, and a self-closing slash.
3) Line 198: Make the style element appear in the head element, not right before it’s needed in the body. Better still, make it a link to an external CSS file and only hook it into wp_head when comments are enabled.
4) Line 227: Add HTML opening comments to “hide” the img tag from HTML validators. Closing //–> would go on line 262.
Thanks.
@Gary – Thanks for the help. Will use your comment in the next iteration.
First off, Great app.
I had problems with the cookies “remember me” flag being on by default. This would cause login attempts to fail, yet the user account was created.
I’m sure it’s a conflict from other modules and hacks, (iv’e written the time to live on my blogs cookies.)
Anyways, this should probably be set off by default or adding a config option to turn it off or to leave on
In the twittconnect.php file, I modified this wp_set_auth_cookie($wpuid, false, ”);
I’m using a combo of FB/MS/Twitter connect apps, and everything is working smooth
